The team of the plant biology section of the DSBGA participated in the 114th Congress of the Italian Botanical Society presenting the research results on Platanus orientalis L., carried out within the SiMaSeed project, entitled: “The warmer temperatures determine the germination window of Platanus orientalis L “.
P. orientalis is an interesting floristic element of riparian forests (a habitat of community interest 92C0), distributed from the central Mediterranean to the Himalayas, and of particular conservational interest due to the high pressures and threats acting on it (habitat loss, fungal infection from Ceratocystis platani – “coloured canker of the Platano”, climate changes).
The study concerned the germinative behaviour of the seeds of P. orientalis of the Sicilian populations of the Iblei and Peloritani Mountains, which represent the western limit of the range of the species in Europe.
The information acquired on germination strategies will facilitate the implementation of concrete conservation measures implemented by the SiMaSeed project.
